Something a friend posted on Facebook (Monday, July 19th) to gin up a little populist outrage:

My response:

"Whose land is it?"

Then:

"Is this private land, or is it stuff the state probably shouldn't own, but does anyway?"

Then after someone asked (seriously) "How do we stop it?" and someone else stated "Symbolism matters. That is why they want to build it and that is why they should not," I responded:

"How does one prevent a private entity (such as a Muslim mosque, or Christian church, or Jewish synagogue) from building a house of worship on private land (i.e. that they have already acquired)? Or, how does a government (be it federal, state, regional, or local) choose to *not* sell land they probably shouldn't have owned in the first place, but (for better or worse) do anyway, to members of one religion, even if it is [arguably] symbolic?"

A few days later, Reason caught up to this story.

I think he missed some important issues here (like the ones *I* raised, lol), but oh well:

The genus 'Syma' (Kingfishers)

Per Wikipedia, there are two species in the genus 'Syma':

• Syma megarhyncha (the Mountain Kingfisher)
• Syma torotoro (the Yellow-billed Kingfisher)

Ever since learning of this ~10-15 years ago, I have been intrigued with this genus (since I share a last name with it).

How did the genus acquire the name 'Syma'? If my understanding of [Linnean?] taxonomy is correct, the describer gets to name the genus.

Per Wikipedia, Syma megarhyncha was described by Salvadori in 1896.

Per Wikipedia, Syma torotoro was described by Lesson in 1827.

Thus, Lesson would have been the describer who got to 'name' the genus Syma (Wikispecies confirms this). But why? The answer to that is likely in his paper,* which is written in French.

According to Wikipedia, René Primevère Lesson was was a French surgeon and naturalist.

Old Nike shoes I gave to a down-on-his luck guy at a gas station in Junction...

I purchased them in the mid-'90s... probably 95, but possibly as late as '96, but no later.

I know I had them when I worked for Dr. Woodruff, because I remember wearing them out to his house in Rockport.

They were *not* the Air Huarache or Air Pegasus... as much as my mind wants to [mis-]remember them that way.

They were base-color white, with purple and lime-green. I want to say they had a running shoe front instead of a cross-trainer front, but I can't swear to it.

They had "cut-outs" mid-sole like the [original] Nike Breathe Free II. [link1; link2; link3]
